Another New Orleans freak:
There is a very busy intersection that makes up one corner of the French Quater @ Rampart and Canal Street. Everyday, this moderatly husky guy usually dressed in spandex shorts and a cutoff sweatshirt is on the “neutral grounds” or median, between the traffic lanes, having a football game with an imaginary team. He has a whistle, ball, the whole deal and as of this morning we have seen him doing his thing as early as 8am (must have been practice before the game, fuck, i dont know, lol) - he calls out plays and everyone who walks by has this completely amazed facial expression. It may not seem to unusual, but it is. I have no clue if he is a prison or mental hospital escapee…

Beenie Man.
If you havent heard about this guy yet then maybe you should. Mr Man, a Jamaican (yes it has its relevance), is promoting the murder of gays and lesbians on his latest “hit”. Jamaica’s most well known gay-rights activist was recently murdered in his own home.
Yes, I am a firm believer in so called free-speech (though from my experience nothing is ever truly “free”) but this is stretching it a bit. I realise every country, culture and individual has thier own preset threshold as to what is considered OK, acceptable, the norm… but i would imagine that collectively we would agree that a potential pop-star calling death on someone because they like to fuck those of the same sex, are of a specific race or belong to any other minority would be shutdown, be it in the U.S., Jamaica or anywhere else.
From what I’ve read, Beenie claims to be simply reflecting the beliefs of his Jamaican culture. I cant fucking stand it when “artists”, religious zealots and other various freaks organize to promote hate or even death while hiding behind the idea that its all preserving or mirroring some supposedly important facet of that particular group. Tell me you dont agree with me and how i live, call me names, fine, i can deal with that… but call out for someone to kill me? Beenie is to be starting a US tour soon.
Promoting extreme hate on a scale as big as the popmusicsphere is not worth defending as free speech and if Beenie finds success in the U.S. then it may become an issue.. Eminem? Sure, he said some anti-gay crap but he didnt tell his worshipping clones with bleached hair to go twink-huntin’.
I’m not for censorship in the least. Art is at its best when dangerous and when causing a stir in peoples lives but when a threat to my well being exists because someone needs to lay it on wax or any other medium, then yes, i am going to say something about it. I am not for shoving my beliefs down other peoples throat. I am for educating all of these bullshit hipocrates whos entire schtick is to eliminate the rights and securities of others based on predetermined beliefs rather then facts and experience. Get over it, learn something and dedicate your creativity, energy and emotion to something that requires more thought.
Damnit, now I have this absurd mental image of Hitler as Backstreet Boy running through a place in my head normally reserved for… wait, no, nevermind… it fits perectly within that odd space.

found a very, very handy tool that records radio streams as individual mp3’s. a nice, legal way to get tracks before you BUY the album(s).use the StreamRipper32 stand-alone program for best results

How did a new Native Instruments program slip by me? Turns out NI have released an intense loop editor called “Intakt” that is fun as hell to play with. Not only is it a VST and DX instrument plug-in that supports many different formats but it is also a stand-alone “toy” that you can fire up and fiddle with to find inspiration. Basically, it allows you to take a drum beat or any other sound, slice it up, and effect the hell out of each “slice” independently with filters, distortion, delays, adsr while retaining the original “groove” (or applying another) … think “Recycle” but many times more demonic and infinatly more useful. I just downloaded the demo last night and only played with it for about 30 minutes but it was enough for me to realise that, yet again, NI have released another program that is unlike anything I’ve heard before. This tool has many more features and uses then i was able to grasp in half an hour so dont consider this anything more then a recommendation and a heads-up.
ahh, technology…

What a weekend. Make that what an uneventful weekend. The only time I spent out of the house was while walking to the neighborhood grocery stop. Being broke in this city is just wrong. Too much to do that requires money in some way or another. Maybe I should consider being a man-whore? Oops, the fiance may not appreciate that, hehe.
I decided to go ahead and finish up the tedious work that was finishing the blog, enjoy the links. We are now officially open - sorry, no viaka shindig, lol. There shouldnt be any more confusion (well, at least with where to find what), please notify me of any mistakes.
Brian will be visiting soon, pehaps he will allow me to use his camera to post some pics worthy of viewing. Looking forward to his company, in need of another dose of a familiar face.
Does a member of my family (the one currently planted on a mountain) have beef with another particular family? If you know what I am alluding to, please tell me what the hell is going on. Other possible methods of communication with that person have failed and I’m getting pissed. Disregard if you have no clue what I’m talking about.
Remember the cat with the flypaper fetish? He was shaved last night out of neccessity, NOT amusement… though i must say it IS pretty damn amusing to see a shaved cat with a poof at the end of his tail. We seem to have an swarm of fleas under our house, likely because of stray cats camping out under the building. Evidently, all of our neighbors are having the same problem and its come down to making our cats pose as devon rexes (sic?) for the time being.
poor things.

07.18.04theme: kikapu pt Iview all past selections here- one of the more lackluster netlabels i have found. MANY MANY releases available but only a few tracks really stuck out. Good music for what it is, really…
komsomol - “arctic fungus” - atmospheric dance with a lil hip-hop thrown in. doesnt move into other ground as i would like and somewhat repetitive but, hey, it IS dance music. good stuff.
crashed by car - “glow projector” - warm, fuzzy synth piece with some strange things going on.
kosik - “settings” - nice synth drone with a very thick undercurrent.
oveloe - “shade of black” - slick techno with a funky bassline. wish it had vocals.
karaoke tundra - “untitled” - test-tone or musick? you decide. (note: i was hard pressed to find 5 good songs on kikipu in the amount of time i allowed myself)
–each song cand be downloaded by clicking on the song title and going from there, if a website is available each can be reached by clicking on that artists name.

–yeah its been a few days since my last post. blogger has been having a rash of problems so i have been unable to properly edit my code to what i imagine to be a final version.
i think i have decided on what the main content will be and, well, it will be whatever the hell i come to think of at that time, lol. there will be strong emphasis on music, music technology, software, digital/tangible/imagined art in various forms and of course my journal of stupid day to day activities with plenty of pictures of stupid shit like cats and lizards (still the best way to keep up w/ my goings on)
obviously i have gone with a much lighter color scheme to make it a little easier on the eyes and to make it more portable-device friendly. i am getting a good response to the minimal white design so i may stick with it. again, things are still under construction and i havent released this page for *full* public viewing so please contact me or leave a comment if there is anything YOU would like to see included on this page (polls, games etc…). i have also added an invisible traffic counter and guestbook so i can keep my eye on your silly lil’ asses and bitch you out if you havent been visiting. the links sections will likely become pages within pages as i keep finding things to add, resulting in a very link-heavy blog.
i’m slowy teaching myself html and now Flash as well… hint hint.
-back to my daily grind (how i love my palm pilot)

07.02.04theme: hippocamp pt I view all past selections here
- a fine netlabel overflowing with free music… one of the biggest. this is certain to be the first group in a long series of highlighted tracks to come. my fave from this list has got to be “theme from powder teeth”. enjoy!
powder teeth - “theme from powder teeth - has a very old skool feel with copious use of 808s and an infectious melody that will get stuck in your head for days. definatly a track i plan to play in a club at some point.
fredo viola - “moon after berceuse” - feedo viola delivers an amazing acapella piece with an almost celtic feel. guarenteed to make your skin tighten.
erik schoster - “fight song” - “fight song” is a nice exaple of found sound/glitch work. eerie, confusing and amusing… if nothing else.
michl bridge aka mike sun - “free” - simply beautiful. think dntel with a bit more twostep groove thrown in (i will be watching his work closely).
maroufleur - “bigmouth (strikes again - and again and again mix)” - ahh, yes, the old familiar big mouth. the vocals are poorly recorded but still a good, slippery, electronic take on a very classic track.
all songs can be found free and legal @ hippocamp in folders hc048, hc055, hc052, hc051 and hc037 respectfully. click artist’s name for webpage where available.

things have been pretty uneventful recently, not much going on. spent the last few days tightening up the page and working on music. i plan to have at least one of my own original audio works online soon (prob on garageband.com) followed by a rash of remixes ive done/been doing for certain people (you know who you are). i recently aquired an amazing, cheap midi controller via brian that has allowed me to begin to finish alot of long promised projects that have been sitting around for far too long. i dont have a fucking clue why i waited years to get a controller, just helps the whole process in ways i never imagined.
notice the new sections over to the left. to listen to a radio station simply click on the link and it should automaticly load into your audio player of choice. most streams are very high quality so broadband is suggested (shouldnt it be illegal to have dial-up at this point anyway? j/k) and not all broadcast 24 hours a day. you may or may not need winamp for the stations so if you expierience an issue with any player or even know if its illegal to post these links directly then please let me know and i will look into it - ive been told neither should be a problem. also, the section currently titled “kurrent disks” will mostly get a new name and i plan for the content to be something along the lines of a weekly top-five of new and old singles, eps, and/or albums ive been digging, possibly evolving into a review section… or something.
over the next day or two there may be a few posts that dont make any sense (as if the others do). please ignore them as they are going to be used for archive and blog development purposes. again, im just starting this and the format/content is still a mixed bag. perhaps it will change into something more cohesive, perhaps not. have any thoughts or suggestions on any of this? if so, please post a comment
