post mp3: muslimgauze - "mosul"

November 29th, 2004

Filed under: Uncategorized — admin @ 4:50 pm

Bryn Jones AKA Muslimgauze already had one of larget run of releases I had ever seen, even before his death on January 14, 1999 in Manchester. Often producing over 8+ discs in a year’s time with hip hop, ambient, drum and bass, dub and even industrial elements, it would also be hard to find an artist with equal range of sound. Six years later there is STILL material coming out from a number of different labels.
The beauty in Bryn’s work is the same that is often overlooked and/or a complained about in most reviews; the stop-start edits, saturated and dangerous noise, over-extended songs and multiple releases that are extremely similar to one another. For the patient listener, there are huge benefits to be had.

post mp3: funkstorung - "disconnected" mp3

November 27th, 2004

Filed under: Uncategorized — admin @ 4:20 pm

Once the bees knees of IDM/glitch-hop, Funkstorung haven’t given up the zip, blips and squeals but have just made them more accessible. I won’t lie, I tend to like shit that can get stuck in my head, I DO occasionally like to be able to remember lyrics and get away from the exhausting, production-heavy, edited-to-hell sound that often gets more attention in the playlists.
Gear-shifts often scare the hell out of me but I have found that when once-IDM scenesters turn and give us something with a bit more heart AND mass-appeal then the result is often some of the most beautiful work that artist/group has done. It’s good to know that there are such artists out there that are not afraid to acknowledge the benefits of an “accessible” sound and are able bend pop music in such a way that you just kind of forget that you once thought “sold out” - if only for a second.
This track is from the second album titled “Disconnected”

A classic track from Portishead’s self titled album. It just doesnt get much more honest or bare then Beth Gibbons.
“Trip Hop” with more hear and soul.
Maybe 2005 will bring a new, long overdue album…

post mp3: dendrites - unknown track

November 26th, 2004

Portland, OR seems to have a very, very healthy experimental music “scene” with being the home of Soleilmoon, Beta-Lactam Ring Records and Smegma. I’ve visited twice and was/am completely in awe with what the area has to offer in the arts

As you may recall, I mentioned on a previous entry that I was planning to post a track from the Dendrites, a project of my good friend Ryan. Well, here we go… an attempt at being completely unbiased.

The Dendrites are based in Portland here in the U.S. and from what I’ve gathered it is a rather eclectic mix of friends pulling from every type of influence imaginable and then putting the end result on stage.

This track is live from Dunes, evidently a stomping ground for us pretentious art folk of the world. As with most live recordings the quality isn’t exactly the best but its still tolerable and worth the time spent to look past this minor annoyance.

From what I can make out, this cut features Alyssa (Ryan’s plasma twin) doing her lush and adorable vocal thing ala Allison Shaw and Ryan himself clicking on with his fast paced, instantly recognizable, middle-eastern/jazz influenced percussion. There are others twiddling away on string plucks, synth swoops and burps but alas they remain faceless for the time being (Todd, are you in there? Perhaps those involved that may be reading this might care to leave a comment?!). I cannot really compare this track to anything because it is just so unusual. The first few moments have an indie-pop feel (uh oh, I can see the reaction now) but shifts as it progresses and is quickly submerged back into obscurity by the improv aspect that *seems* to be the focus of the song if not The Dendrites in general.

You just need to hear the track for yourself.

I look forward to hearing more. I should be getting a disc or two of their stuff soon so perhaps they will allow me to upload some more files for download.

From a letter following this post:

“…at the time we were: mat- guitar, jen- synth and oboe, todd- synth and voice, joel- bass, clarinet and beatbox, rob- fiddle, flute and bass (and you know what al and i were doing)”

Thanks for clearing that up Ryan :-)

Posted for friend and fellow music-whore, Brian aka why-isnt-he-a-regular-twx-contributor-guy. We both have a taste for the Blectum’s very distinct trash-electronics that verge more into noise territory more then the typical American sense of “music”. Need to smile?

post mp3: ohgr - "PawSee - hidden track’

November 23rd, 2004

One of the best tracks of Ogre’s (Skinny Puppy) solo work under the name “Ohgr” happens to be a hidden track on the latest album. Over-vocoded lyrics, snappy 80’s beat… fuck, another electro-pop song. When I heard he was working alone a few years back I never imagined the vocalist for Skinny Puppy would dive into (dark) electro-pop but he has in his first two solo albums and doesn’t seem to give a damn about what people think about it… and good for him, because it works.

Awaiting the flames…

post BIG news times two, TWX expands… calling all laptop jockeys and other musicians

November 22nd, 2004

Filed under: Uncategorized — admin @ 4:47 pm

Two big projects are in the works.

1) We will soon see the birth of a new monthly theme for a local (kickass) independant magazine that will remain nameless for the time being until things are set in stone. Looks like TWX is gonna get some monthly ink rather then just pixels for once. I will be giving updates as details get ironed out.

2) So, I am curious to see if there are artists out there that would be interested in a “The Witness Exchange” netlabel spin-off possibly to be named “Exchange” (not used from what I can tell). I have been toying with this idea for awhile and thought I would finally propose the idea to the world and see what happens. If you do not make music, please pass this along to anyone you know that does.

The idea for this was spawned from a project that I cooked up and have going w/ my friend Ryan where I make him a disc of sounds that he then manipulates and adds to while making his own disc of sounds, sends both discs back to me and I then repeat the process and so on.

Here are my thoughts so far:

This netlabel would obviously follow the good ol’ Creative Commons License and be in mp3 format. Its to be a constantly evolving community project as well as a chance for an individual to display one’s creativity.

All work will ONLY use a member-submitted sound source or “pool”, 100% through and through. This “pool” will be made entrirely of member created and submitted sounds - synth/drum/perc hits, field recordings, arpeggios, ANYTHING that wouldn’t make the RIAA, MPA or any other copyright bully take notice. Once it is decided that a “pool” is big enough then all members are to reuse, remix, destroy and weave these sounds into music in anyway. Limiting? Not at all… anyone who has spent 30 minutes with a decent sampler and some effects knows how easy it is to transform a speech loop into a percussive track and then use that same sound to make a synth pad. ANY sound may be used but must also be uploaded into the “pool” for everyone else - so in all reality there is no limit to the sounds used or with how far you can twist a sound, use just one sound or use them all.

Releases would mainly be compilations of member-submitted material but not exclusively compilations. Netlabel members can decide on themes, concepts, whatever. When a “pool” gets exhausted it will be archived (perhaps for later use) and the process will start over. Depending on the size of a pool, any resulting release(s) would be the volume(s) for each “pool”. Content resulting from the source itself is open to ANY genre unless a theme says otherwise. The length of each release would be determined by the amount of work submitted, organized to “flow” and to fit onto CD’s for burning by those who care to do so - multiple discs per release if needed. (maybe a limited edition of cdrs w/ handmade artwork for each release?). Of course, each release will be different and have different guidelines but if you really invest some thought into it you should see that it could become a very interesting mega-collaboration (and sample source for those involved) that will continuously change. Call it a novelty, a schtick… but I see potential for some interesting results.

You are guaranteed to be heard on whatever project you take part in, nobody decides what is “good enough” other then the artist. A very positive place. abuse will not be tolerated. You are only an active member for as long as you like.

The individual shines with what they do with this source and with what original sounds they submit to the pool. The core idea that we all use/have access to the same sounds to make music will be the key to this netlabel… kind of like a series of remix albums of songs that never existed, not a competition but a collective thought.

This may all seem almost too vague but that is intentional. I have left certain ideas out to see if this sparks any interest for discussing the possibilities. If there is enough interest I will setup an email group to for the involved and we can go from there.

A central location for uploading to and downloading from the “pool” is essential as is a place for the netlabel to call home, be it a blog of everyones self-hosted clips or a big site to host said files. If there is interest and need, I will do everything to make sure we have a place w/ plenty of space and bandwidth and throw down my own money to get this into motion. Again, I have more ideas with this as well. This will be a large project but I am prepared to make it work.

There may be other projects like this going on but I don’t know of any. If there are, then this will be one to add to the list. Please let me know if you are aware of any such places online as it would be interesting to eventually get some interaction and cross-pollination with other groups of artists.

Please, only serious interest only. You must at very least have a software or hardware sampler as you will be dealing with audio files and not “patches”. You must have prior knowledge of music software and most everything else related to a typical home studio as this should not be a place for beginer-level learning.

If you made it this far and are interested, have any questions then please email me and DO NOT simply post a comment to The Witness Exchange. PLEASE refer anybody that you think might be interested.

This is in pre-birth stage, seeds of a plan that may or may not see the light in the next month or two, feeling the interest… keep this in mind.

Thanks for reading, this will be re-posted as needed.

post mp3: amon tobin - "deo"

November 22nd, 2004

Amon Tobin’s music is intense, inspired and entirely pulled from samples of his collection of old records. The best way to describe his work would be to reference Drum and Bass and movie soundracks but even then you are left scratching your head. This track is from the album “Supermodified” and if it is at all familiar it may due to Coke’s advertising campaign of last year.

Also working under the name “Cujo”, Amon is one to watch for innovative, involved listening.

post mp3: underworld - "two months off"

November 20th, 2004

Filed under: Uncategorized — admin @ 1:10 am

Not only is “Two Months Off” one of the best tracks from the “A Hundred Days Off” album but possibly one of Underworlds best songs overall. This cut starts with a very hard-hitting beat that moves and shifts into a slick chord loop with cycling vocals that opens up the tracks as it carries on. Underworld always leaves room for thinking in the music, making it just as interesting on a pair of headphones as it is on the dancefloor.

I’m sure we all know this song by now but here it is again… the infectious, ultra hipness that is “How We Do” by Mount Sims.

If you dont know the song (or the band) be prepared for a an updated version of the mid-80s Minneapolis sound as heard through an original Sony Cassette Walkman with built in disco switch ™ flipped to “high” - or something like that (I dont even know what I am saying here).

This was a frequent pick when DJing last year and it never seems to lose it’s appeal. Still waiting to see these bastards live…

Most of the tracks on Math Music’s site failed to really hold my attention but this song definatly earned a place in this months heavy-rotation directory. “Perfekt” has a dark Depeche Mode-esque edge to it and the sounds are thick with just the right amount of warmth and grit.

I do my best to like what I hear but I must admit, sometimes I am a bit too busy to really give things a fair listen. Visit Math Music’s site and give the rest of the tracks a spin, perhaps I may have overlooked a gem.

post jhonn Balance of Coil dead

November 15th, 2004

Filed under: Uncategorized — admin @ 7:25 pm

From the official coil site:

“We are greatly saddened to have to you that at about 5.30 pm Saturday Nov 13th, Jhonn Balance, was killed in an accident at home.

Under the influence of alcohol he fell from the first floor landing, hitting his head on the floor some 15ft below.

Peter/Sleazy who was in the front room heard the noise, came out investigate and found him unconscious, though still breathing.

Balance was rushed to hospital, where his condition deteriorated, and he died soon after, without ever regaining consciousness.

There is no suggestion that this event was in any way deliberate, in fact, anything other than a tragic accident.

Unusually, Balance had been cheerfull during the day, and was looking forward to seeing Ian at the weekend, and working on new recordings this week.

* * *

Our awareness that physical death is not an end, but mearly a transition to a whole different part of existence, a new adventure, should by now be clear to everyone.

Jhonn has simply crossed over the Threshold…

As Thomas Olson wrote this morning: “Listening to some Coil songs now, and they are all sounding to me now as if they were written for this moment….”

Nevertheless the parting will be hard for us all. Fortunately there is much to be done that will keep us busy in the next few difficult weeks.

When we have more details we will post them.”

I left work because of this.

He was the voice of Coil.

This man was an inspiration to my creativity in many, many ways.

That is all I can say for now

R.I.P Jhonn, you will be missed beyond any threshold.
