post gear: sennheiser orpheus

OMG. Best reviews ever.

Ok, so I was just link-hopping and somehow came to this page from Electronic Enterprises, a high-end A/V product site. Well, having heard of the Sennheiser Orpheus, I was simply delighted to see these three reviews (likely the same individual)

Original description:
The Orpheus combination offers the audiophile the ultimate in reference sound reproduction. The Best Headphones In The World, that is the unanimous verdict on the Orpheus reached by the international trade press. Audiophile limited edition only 300 systems worldwide.

Keep in mind, it costs just a few cents under $28,000. Yes, you read that right. $28k… headphones.

Now, a taste of the reviews:
My first impressions were one of total awe and delight as I don”t usually get a birthday present from my Nan. The headphones came in a lovely silver box,too which was made of recycled elephant dung.
It did take a while setting up the other thing. There were too many wires and I couldn”t find a slot for the batteries. The manual’’s in German I think.

I did have a problem when I went jogging. Well, more specifically my valet did . He kept complaining about the weight of the portable light display unit.( Which by the way only has a yellowish glow. You”d think that there would be a few more colours!)

I did get round to wiring them to my iPod and gave them a blast. Here are some of my test results

First was Fire Starter by the Prodidgy ( I f@#king love that Keith bloke .He’’s mad for it) 8/10

Next I tried some old foggie music George Michael’’s Careless Wrister. Sounded okayish but the song’’s the same as him, a right w!#ker! 6/10

Staying with old gay geezers, I played Sir Elton’’s Candle in the wind. You know the version for Princess Di. The Piano sonded a bit tinny. 4/10

Finally was the the girl who won that TV show ” Reality Sucks” . I can”t remember her name but she’’s pretty fit and she’’s got her belly button pieced the same as my Mum. 9/10

They sound all right I suppose, but they look really old.

Well done, sir. Well done.

post mp3/podcast: letherette on percussion lab

November 16th, 2008

Filed under: electronic, experimental, glitch, hip-hop, podcasts — admin @ 1:23 pm

One of my fave podcasts, Percussion Lab, recently posted a sweet entry from upcoming hip-tronica act Letherette titled ‘Brown Lounge Vol 2′. This download is nearly and hour and a half of prime, abstract beats layered with equally lush synth leads and often steals vocals (and sounds) from well known acts… but Letherette makes it all a thousand times more interesting than the originals could ever hope to be. I am looking forward to an official debut from Letherette soon(ish?)

From the site:
‘Andy & Rich of Letherette met decades ago and have been making mysterious, charmingly unpolished music ever since. Their warm, tape enhanced beats are crafted from bits and pieces of the finest, melodic source material from music’s golden genres, funk and soul. Their roughly chopped rythms are imbued with a personable, feel good vibe that is lacking in most modern music these days. Everyone from Madlib, MF Doom, Flying Lotus to Pete Rock comes to mind when listening to this mix.’

I couldn’t agree more.

I will be there, here, in New Orleans. You should be too.

post rights: mormons stole them

I try to shy away from political posts and such unless I feel it truly is a matter of importance. That being said, Proposition 8 has passed in California. Protests will be happening everywhere this weekend. While I do not live in Cali, I am very pissed that such a ‘peace loving’ org could continue to push laws for discrimination… never mind the whole polygamy thing (that I feel they have a right to do, btw)

Please visit this link, educate yourself and sign the petition towards the bottom. It doesn’t matter where you live and doing something so simple could help make a difference.

This was the first time EVER that rights have been taken away from American minorities… being Gay and Native American I couldn’t not make a post on this matter.

While I am at it, the right person won the election and I cried my eyes out over the whole night, hehe.

/end political rant.

post toys: into infinity

Really interesting find today. Into Infinity is, as they put it:

“Explore the wide possibilities of forever! INTO INFINITY is an art and music exhibition presented by DUBLAB and Creative Commons. It is built on audio loops and circular canvases that are available online to the public for sharing, remixing, and resubmission.”

The ‘Eye’ section is here, and my fave the ‘Ear’ section is here. Artists include dntel, Flying Lotus and Braken among many, many others.

I am particularly fond of this project as it reminds me of an experiment titled “Unbalanced” I did a few years back in memory of Coil’s Jhonn Balance. The idea was to make two cd’s of faded loops and textures to be played randomly on two separate devises… think Flaming Lip’s Zaireeka but much more random and much less professional. Maybe I’ll dig up the project and post it here at some point.

post mp3: amon tobin releases ‘the foley room - live’ for free

November 7th, 2008

Woot! Amon Tobin has released a live recording of The Foley Room - Live in Brussels clocking in at over an hour and fifteen minutes. Those unfamiliar now have a legal, free download that is a worthy listen of his work. Being live, the download is of very high quality w/ many new textures and a sound that actually feels ‘live’, something uncommon w/ electronic music. Things get really fanfuckinfab around the ten minute mark.

From the site:

““F*** visuals we’re sinking every last penny into the sound system!” - Amon Tobin

Back in early 2007 Amon Tobin released his latest full length album titled Foley Room and put together a tour focusing on the sound and the music, rather then thinking too much about lights, projections and stage antics. After all, this is music.

It’s about the sound and the shared experience of being immersed in waves of bass while dissonant collections of rhythm and melody move, confuse, annoy you a bit then move you again. a passionate affair this recording is an attempt to capture not just the music but the atmosphere of the show as a whole.

The long awaited, full-length, official recording of the legendary 2007 Foley Room tour is finally available at www.amontobin.com !  Recorded by Studio Brussels at the world famous AB theatre in Belgium - which arguably has the best sound system in Europe. After months of back and forth and despite everyone’s best efforts the mix was in danger of being edited into the ground to accommodate big labels and publishers. Rather than release a compromised version commercially, the decision was made to give it away for free instead.”

Download this NOW, dim the lights, grab a drink and in-volve.
(hint, after the jump, click ‘mp3′ - took me about 2 frustrating minutes to get it. Also, upon listen, increase your bass levels.)
